It can really look the part, too, but the visage is just another inconsistency that doesn’t stay above board 100% of the time. The game really does hit a nice stride when you consider the range of locations on offer, from the rolling hills of Malaysia to the craggy rocks of Monument Valley. Instead, I decided, I’d pile my time into the game’s free race mode, which let me sideline any boring, elongated sense of progression and instead hit the track at my own pace – the locations, routes, and cars that I wanted. It never improves, either, and I very quickly shut off all interest at all. ‘Here’s how you accept a contract, here’s how you choose your next event’ It’s fully uninspired and workmanlike, a long, long way from the polished pizzazz of Playground Games’ aforementioned romp. Its first race is a vertical slice, point-to-point taster session through the dusty deserts of Kenya, before you’re thrust into – you guessed it – a conveyor belt of boring tutorials about events, contracts and more. Its career is a monotonous slog full of meaningless progressions through contracts and offers you simply don’t care about. While you do occasionally see the sparks of great racer DNA emerge from beneath its bonnet, it’s mostly a scrappy, inconsistent rally game that never reaches, let alone surpasses, its older contemporaries. The pacing of Forza Horizon and how it so deftly dishes out cars, races and spectacular showcase events is the best example of it in recent racers. At least, in some games though, the waiting is worth it. Waiting, waiting, waiting.Īs racing games have progressed – become more complex and complicated, as well as become full to the brim with 100-car rosters – the level of waiting has increased too. Waiting to be shown how the garage systems and upgrade paths work, or how to access new contract offers, or whatever else the developers have cooked up as manufactured excuses to keep you off the track. Waiting for a voiceover artist to explain the deeper intricacies of racing disciplines you’ve played countless times before. +Great choice of variety of playable characters Game: Mario Kart 7 Genre: Racing Developer: Nintendo I would have preferred to see a Diddy Kong Racing styled choice between flying or driving on selected tracks. This is fun, but again adds little to the racing. This game also includes short flying sections (sometimes shoehorned into the retro tracks) where you leave certain ramps and a hang glider pops out of your car. This is already a little easier than the others, probably due to the previously mentioned lack of "cheating" CPU. To me this adds little to the racing - if anything it makes it even easier to get to the front of the pack. It IS nice to see them in the upgraded game engine though! Gameplay remains largely the same as you will know from the series, with additions from the Wii title including a speed boost if you hit the hop button as you leave a ramp. One strange choice though was to include levels from the DS game, which you can play on your 3DS console anyway, but I guess not EVERYONE has it. These are fun and almost entirely great choices. Of course the game includes a Retro cup, with levels from earlier entries remade in the 3DS engine. The game seems to have been balanced better than others, with the CPU players not seeming to "cheat" as often - on MKDS I would often be close to winning a race when a few million red and blue shells would come at me and make me end 5th. The tracks are all exciting and fun, the graphics are beautiful and the music enjoyable on every track. I've long preferred the handheld offerings, at least for single player fun, and this entry has not let the series down. The game seems to have been balanced better than others, with the CPU players not seeming to "cheat" as often - on MKDS I would An almost perfect Mario Kart game. I will continue to have mixed feels about this game but for now … ExpandĪn almost perfect Mario Kart game. I may have ranted a lot about the cons of this game, but the things Nintendo did do well in this game, were fantastic. All in all, the game feels lazy, and was probably just rushed out to help out with the 3ds's abysmal launch sales. The elimination for balloon battle, shine runners, etc, was the best part of battle mode, but with coins it is pretty much impossible to lose and extremely boring. If you don't have Wifi or a friend with the game, you can play Grand Prix (Gets old really fast and can't choose specific maps), Time Trial (Boring.), and the terrible Battle mode. Taking out classics such as Waluigi, Toadette, Birdo, Diddy Kong, etc, for characters like Lakitu, Metal Mario, HONEY QUEEN? Really? Probably Mario Kart 7's most unforgivable mistake was the absence of a VS mode. Now for the negatives: I have no idea why Nintendo brought back coins, it only adds to the luck factor when you're hit 5 times in a row by shells, bullet bills, stars, and your loss of coins causes your maximum speed to go down. And the kart customization is pretty cool. The soundtrack is pleasant, the controls feel smooth and accurate. And the underwater and hang gliding actually feels like a much-needed feature. The game looks fantastic for a Nintendo Handheld. I will start with the positives: The tracks are very good. Don't get me wrong, I love Mario Kart, but I could have done fine with not buying this game. The soundtrack is pleasant, the I think people are giving this game leverage just because it's "Mario Kart". I think people are giving this game leverage just because it's "Mario Kart". I noticed an Erudite boy looking ecstatic and an Amity girl looking shocked, maybe even scared. I couldn't help but take a peak at some of the initiates' faces. We flew down the stairs in a massive pack. Divergent, the upcoming film based upon the popular literary series, is having its score pressed to vinyl, which is now up for pre-order. Straight after the ceremony, Dauntless took off. I speak, like, a pathetically small amount of Japanese, but I can understand enough to give this little walkthrough. Go to the top of the stairs, out the front door to enter that mission. After you select a mission, it'll make a weird noise and "mission" will pop up next to your name. I suggest going through the tutorials, they aren't that hard to figure out. Just go to any mission, the last one is actual field missions while the 1st 5 are tutorials. I'd buy it in a creating the character and watching the opening cutscene, speak with the first girl you see. And I'm such a sucker for nifty character creators.Namco Bandai should port this over to the US. Not to mention the character creator is pretty nifty. But here comes God Eater, a quirky, anime-inspired game in the vein of Monster Hunter, but totally solo-able. I read somewhere that the developers wanted this, in order to encourage people to play with others, but only two of my friends own PSPs, and out of those, none want the game. The difficulty playing by myself is too much for me. It's too hard for me (I know, I'm such a little bitch). I want to like Monster Hunter - I really do! I find that I just can't. But really, what drew me to this game in the first place were the comparisons to Monster Hunter. Well, the summary on the wiki page is nice. But it's really a nice-looking game, and so far, from what I can tell (I'm working at a minimum of Japanese comprehension here), it has a really nice story. Haha, I can't really say that right now, I just booted up the demo a few minutes ago. It may not be for those easily turned off by violence, but the truth is that “Mortal Kombat” really comes to life in these fight sequences and their fatalities-finally putting on film what fans of the games have loved for so long in a way that most people thought they would never really see. Jax ( Mehcad Brooks) tries to warn him of his destiny before getting his arms frozen and ripped off by the classic video game villain. An MMA fighter named Cole Young ( Lewis Tan), a new character to the MK universe, has always wondered what his dragon birthmark means, and discovers that he’s one of the aforementioned champions when Sub-Zero comes for him and his family. Because villains never play fair, Shang Tsung ( Chin Han) decides to rig the final tournament in a sense by preemptively killing the champions of Earthrealm, sending his fighters to dispatch them one by one. The film then jumps forward to reveal that Outworld has won nine out of ten tournaments in Mortal Kombat, meaning one more will spell the end of Earthrealm. well, fans of the games know but the movie keeps it a secret long enough that I won’t spoil it here. Hanzo is killed by Bi-Han, but his spirit is taken to the Netherrealm, where he will become. The choreography in this first scene is surprisingly strong, blending moves familiar to “MK” fans with a level of intense combat that you don’t really see made by Hollywood anymore-think blades stuck through the tops of heads. Anderson, but fell into development hell after the failure of 1997’s abysmal “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.” McQuoid works from a script by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham that’s clearly familiar with the source material, dropping in fan favorites like Raiden and Liu Kang but also digging a little deeper to bring to life characters like Mileena and a truly dodgy CGI version of Goro.Īn effective prologue opens the film in 17 th century Japan as Lin Kuei assassins led by Bi-Han ( Joe Taslim) attack Hanzo Hasashi ( Hiroyuki Sanada) and his family, killing Hanzo’s wife and son with his, shall we say, freeze power. Simon McQuoid makes his directorial debut with “Mortal Kombat,” which has basically been in production for a quarter-century given there was supposed to be a third film from the ‘90s series that launched Paul W.S. Sure, video games aren’t exactly known for closure, but so much of “Mortal Kombat” feels like set-up that you’ll just wish someone could have. While the film comes to life in ways that video game flicks often fail to do in its action scenes, it grinds to a halt during a deadly long training/destiny centerpiece that drags the film out to almost 110 minutes, and then it ends with a whimper, setting up what feels like a franchise instead of providing a satisfying finale. There are some showdowns that will appeal to people who have played all of the “MK” games (which includes yours truly, believe it or not), including match-ups that involve now-classic video game characters like Sub-Zero, Kano, Raiden, and many more. For the first time really, the truly gruesome appeal of “Mortal Kombat” makes it to the big screen, complete with some combo fighting moves pulled directly from the games, certain character-based catch phrases, and even a few famous fatalities-the finishing moves that included spines being ripped from bodies through the top of your opponent’s head. Here’s the important thing for fans to know: it’s as R-rated as the games themselves. Almost 30 years after “Mortal Kombat” changed the fighting game landscape forever, a reboot to the film franchise based on these brutally violent games arrives in theaters and on HBO Max for 30 days. If we'd had three days' warning of a dangerous impactor heading for Sudan, what could the world have done? The remote location of the impact would have been fortunate for humanity in general, but disastrous for the few people who lived out in that remoteness. Still, though, the warning time for a tens-of-meter-diameter object could only be measured in days. We will likely have way more than 20 hours' warning of an incoming dangerous object. The bigger and more hazardous an object is, the brighter it is, and the sooner we will detect it. The five other closest infrasound stations were briefly examined for obvious signals and showed none - more detailed signal processing of these additional data are ongoing in the search for additional signals.īut of course we now have to ask ourselves: what would have happened if the object was much bigger than 2 meters in diameter? Reassuringly, the first thing that would have happened is that the detection most likely would have happened much earlier. The dominant period of 5-6 seconds corresponds to an estimated energy (using the AFTAC period at maximum amplitude relationship from ReVelle, 1997) of 1.1 - 2.1 kilotons of TNT. Moreover, assuming a stratospheric mean signal speed of 0 28 km/s, the arrival time corresponds to an origin time near 02:43 UT, which is consistent with the expected impact time near 02:45:40 UT given expected variations in stratospheric arrival speeds. The backazimuth of the signal over the entire 7 element array is shown in the attached map - it clearly points to within a few degrees of the expected arrival direction. The signal correlation was highest at very low frequencies - the dominant period of the waveform was 5-6 seconds. The airwave was detected at the Kenyian Infrasonic Array, (IMS station IS32), beginning near 05:10 UT on and lasting for several minutes. The image is below:Ī very preliminary examination of several infrasound stations proximal to the predicted impact point for the NEO 2008 TC3 has yielded one definite airwave detection from the impact. Astronomers in Spain recorded 2008 TC3's entry into Earth's shadow, hiding it from view for its final hour of descent. Time quickly ran out to observe the asteroid, however. Initial analysis of the spectra via comparison with the solar analogue 16CygB reveals a featureless reflectance spectrum with no indication of the silicate absorption feature longward of 800nm." Presumably there were other observers who were able to obtain spectral data, though not as many as were gathering positional information. The spectra cover the range 546-995nm at a resolution of 4nm. The first I heard of such data being captured successfully was from this item on the MPML by Alan Fitzsimmons and coworkers at Armagh Observatory: "We obtained optical spectra of 2008 TC3 using the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope and ISIS spectrograph on Oct 6.93-6.94UT. These times are uncertain by +/- 15 seconds or so."Īfter positional information, the next challenge was to obtain spectral data - information on the color of the object, which would help to classify it and determine its origin. The initial impact prediction was confirmed by JPL scientist Paul Chodas at 01:45 UTC: "We estimate that this object will enter the Earth's atmosphere at around 2:45:28 UTC and reach maximum deceleration around 2:45:54 UTC at an altitude of about 14 km. With the object so close to Earth, the parallax of different observers on different parts of the globe allowed much greater precision than is usual, given the short observing arc. Steve Chesley (JPL) reports that atmospheric entry will occur on 2008 UTC over northern Sudan." The absolute magnitude indicates that the object will not survive passage through the atmosphere. Together these four observers provided enough data on the object so that a Minor Planet Electronic Circular was issued at 14:59 UTC the same day, giving 8TA9D69 the more formal name 2008 TC3, and advising the astronomical community that "The nominal orbit given above has 2008 TC3 coming to within one earth radius around Oct. Three other observatories reported sightings within the next few hours - Sabino Canyon in Arizona and Siding Spring Observatory and a Royal Astronomical Society site, both in Australia. To briefly review: the night before last (my time), or at 06:38 UTC on October 6, astronomers at the University of Arizona discovered an object provisionally called 8TA9D69 that appeared to be on a collision course with Earth. Fortunately for my sanity, nearly all of the events are neatly collected on the Minor Planets Mailing List. It has happened so quickly that it's necessary to convert all times to UTC in order to see how events have unfolded across the globe. Over the last 24 hours it has been tiring but really fun to watch the drama of asteroid 2008 TC3. |
